What’s in Season?

Brussels Sprouts

Try out Brussels sprouts this Thanksgiving! This vegetable
is usually in the market
during late fall.

Buy fresh green sprouts and look out for wilt and spots. To keep them fresh for a long time, always store them in an airtight container or a plastic bag.

Asian Recipe:

Although this is not your quintessential Asian vegetable, a great way to prepare it with an Asian twist is to sautee finely sliced brussel sprouts with thinly sliced lap cheong or Chinese sausage and shiitake mushrooms. Like bacon, lap cheong adds flavor and cuts the bitterness of the vegetable. Best to blanch the vegetable before cooking.

Steam the lap cheong for 12 - 15 minutes before slicing. Julienne fresh shiitake mushrooms (or soak dried ones for at least 20 minutes in warm water).

Heat wok to a high temperature, add some minced garlic, then add vegetables, and then sliced lap cheong. Season with salt to taste.

Mix well and serve.

Thanksgiving Food Tip

Use your Thanksgiving leftovers and enjoy a treat!

Asian Salsa
by Kimmy Tang

Shred the leftover turkey. Add mango, tomato, onion, lychee, cilantro, some vinegar and chill. Wrap it all in a tortilla and it is ready to eat!

Fried Rice

Dice leftover turkey and use in fried rice. Consider adding chopped celery (leftovers from turkey stuffing), cooked carrots and green onion. Tasty and nutritious too.

Soup

Use turkey bones with meat in soup. Simply put the meat and bones, not the skin and fat, into boiling water. After boiling for about 3 minutes, turn heat down to simmer for one hour. Skim fat from the top. Add chopped nappa cabbage to soup and boil for 10 minutes before serving. Season with salt to taste.

Recycle your turkey

Stir fry shredded meat with preserved vegetabes and sliced black mushrooms and julienned bamboo shoots. Best way to "recycle" your turkey.
