New Asian Cuisine Collaborates with Healthy Dining
by Healthy Dining

healthydiningA leader in restaurant nutrition since 1990, Healthy Dining’s mission is two-fold:

* To provide consumers with information that empowers them to make healthier choices when dining out; and
* To provide restaurants with guidance and recognition in connection with their offering a selection of healthier choices as part of their menu mix.

In March 2007, the company launched HealthyDiningFinder.com, a website that enables consumers to identify Healthy Dining choices at restaurants ranging from fast food to upscale dining. How does the website work? Consumers begin their search by specifying a location, preferred price range, and if desired, other criteria such as take-out, delivery, and catering. A list of the “matched” restaurants then appears, from which you can access more information about any of the restaurants, including the nutrition profiles for up to 10 of its healthier items.

Healthy Dining’s philosophy is that nearly every restaurant has some “healthier” choices. Healthy Dining restaurants don’t need to have an image or reputation as being healthy; specific dishes from any restaurant can be posted as long as the menu items meets Healthy Dining’s nutrition criteria:

1) Entrées (or full meals) must include at least one of the following:
1. Lean protein
2. Fruits and/or vegetables
3. 100% whole grains

2) Entrées (or full meals) may not exceed:
1. 750 calories
2. 25 grams of fat
3. 8 grams of saturated fat

3) Side dishes, appetizers and desserts may not exceed:
1. 250 calories
2. 8 grams of fat
3. 3 grams of saturated fat

Healthy Dining’s registered dietitians work with restaurants to identify the healthiest choices, and approve all the menu items before they're posted on the site.

Because of the importance of this initiative and in recognition of Healthy Dining’s expertise, the National Restaurant Association joined with Healthy Dining to encourage its member restaurants to join the program. To date, approximately 50,000 restaurant locations have joined the Healthy Dining Program, including large chains like Panda Express and P.F. Chang’s. Independent restaurants are coming on board as well, including Peking Chef in Northeastern Pennsylvania, Cee Fine Thai Dining in Arlington, VA, Little Sheep Mongolian Hot Pot in the San Francisco Bay area, Ten Penh in Washington, DC, Ruby Foo’s in New York City, Emerald of Siam in Richland, WA, Riptide Rockin’ Sushi and Teppan Grill in Mission Viejo, CA, and Chin Chin in Los Angeles. Healthy Dining team looks forward to enlisting many more Asian restaurants, whose cuisine easily lends itself to Healthy Dining.
