Asian Food
The Asian food market, retail and food
service combined, is estimated to be about $5 billion,
according to reports. It is mainly fueled by the
growth of the Asian- American population.
The number of Asian Americans surged
63% in 2000 over the 1990 statistic, according to
the US Census Bureau, making them one of the fastest
and the wealthiest growing population today. Consequently,
there has been an increased interest in Asian cuisine
in the general population.
A 2002 Simmons Market Research Bureau
consumer survey found strong interest in ethnic foods
among the general population. Just over 40% of respondents
agreed that they “enjoy eating authentic foreign foods”.
Asian respondents had, by far, the highest percentage
agreeing to the fondness of international cuisines.
